Abstract: We use decades of data on newly-established foreign invested enterprises (FIEs) in China during 1979-2013 to show a causal effect of manufacturing foreign investment on trade participation. We follow Burchardi et al.(2018)'s method to isolate the exogenous variation of existing manufacturing FIEs among "origin country-destination city" (o-d) pairs: Foreign capital inflows from a foreign country to a Chinese city at a given period depend on an origin-specific push factor(the origin's investment power in China) and a destination-specific pull factor (the city's attractiveness to worldwide investors). The interaction of time-varying variation in push and push factors generates quasi-random distribution of manufacturing FIEs. We find that (1) Existing manufacturing FIEs in a city have a significantly positive effect on trade participation with the origin country, both in total export and import; (2) Manufacturing FIEs particularly shed light on impacts on import and processing trade, reflecting that an important role of foreign capital is to bring inputs and incorporate China to international specialization; (3) An extended "origin-destination-final markets" analysis framework enlarges the causality between foreign investment and trade beyond "o-d" pairwise relationship, entitling China as a "world factory" that delivery products to the markets all over the world.
